ENHANCING THE EFFECTIVENESS OF USING VIDEOS IN ENGLISH TEACHING AT HSU WITH EXPERTS FROM OXFORD UNIVERSITY PRESS

• To help lecturers update new teaching trends before the new semester, the General English Program of the Faculty of English Language and International Culture at HSU collaborated with Oxford University Press to organize a workshop titled “Using Video to Motivate Adult Learners”

• At the workshop, expert Christopher Sheen from the Oxford Teachers�?Academy helped lecturers understand how to use videos effectively, not just as passive presentation tools. Additionally, he introduced new techniques and technologies to integrate videos into lessons, including activities before, during, and after watching videos, to help learners better retain knowledge and language. This was also an opportunity for HSU lecturers to exchange professional knowledge and practical experience with teachers from other institutions and experts in the field of teaching.

We hope that the insights shared during the workshop will provide lecturers with new perspectives, enabling them to apply these in practice to make their lessons in the upcoming semester more dynamic and engaging, in line with international standards at Hoa Sen University.

Last weekend, the Faculty of English Language and International Culture at HSU organized a talk show on ‘Foreign Language Reading Skills�?at the Ho Chi Minh City Book Street.

With valuable insights on reading skills and engaging English minigames led by Mr. Trần Quang Hải �?Director of the General English Program, and Ms. Trần Th�?Cẩm Tú �?Deputy Head of the Faculty of English Language and International Culture at HSU, the event attracted a large number of students, parents, and many visitors. They listened, shared, participated in activities, and learned more about HSU’s Go Global program

At the same time, HSU’s bookstore at Book Street became lively as people visited, bought books, and checked in with the super cute Sen mascots.

Throughout nine sessions with diverse topics, new students will engage with interactive teaching methods that focus on the comprehensive development of Listening, Speaking, Reading, Writing, and Critical Thinking skills, similar to English learning environments in English-speaking countries. This will allow students to enhance their English proficiency, improve communication skills, develop soft skills, and broaden their understanding through cultural exchange activities.

The English Language Program at Hoa Sen University has been training English teachers since 2008, contributing to the workforce in high demand not only in Ho Chi Minh City but also in neighboring areas. With the Politburo’s conclusion on August 12, 2024, regarding “Gradually making English the second language in schools,�?the need for high-quality English teacher training is substantial.

With a curriculum that is regularly updated to meet the demands of the labor market, in addition to fundamental specialized courses such as Learner Psychology, Language Theory, Teaching Methods, and Assessment, the distinctive courses of the English Language Program at Hoa Sen University include: Application of Technology in Teaching, Teaching English to Children, Teaching English in Various Contexts (teaching large classes, exam preparation, business English for professionals), Integrated English Teaching in Subjects (teaching Math and Science in English)

With relatively small class sizes and a teaching method that emphasizes practical experience, students get hands-on practice in lessons: preparing lesson plans, creating teaching materials, and ‘teaching�?their classmates (who role-play as students). Each teaching session is analyzed and reviewed by both the teacher and classmates to improve not only the lesson plans but also classroom management skills.
