1. Training objectives and learning outcomes

1.1 Training objectives

The Master’s program in English Language Studies of Hoa Sen University is designed on the basis of combining theoretical background knowledge in the fields of applied linguistic and cultural studies with contemporary discussions and debates on the evolution of language and culture in the era of science, technology and globalization.
On that basis, the program develops students’ different disciplinary perspectives, including linguistic, cultural, sociological, economical, technological, and pedagogical perspectives, being aware of their multidimensional relationships; from which they form critical applications in language instruction, and other communication activities.
In addition, the program also equips students with research competence through evaluating contemporary educational issues in the field of applied linguistics.

1.2 Learning Outcomes

Graduating from the Master of English Studies program, students gain the following knowledge, skills and attitudes:

 Professional capacity

  • Construct solid theoretical understanding of linguistics, culture and society and their interrelation as a foundation for acquiring the in-depth knowledge of English teaching;
  • Critically appraise and internalize the specialized knowledge of English teaching methodology and assessment in line with the training objectives;

Professional skills:

  • Utilize the language flexibly and professionally to communicate in academic and working environments;
  • Interpret and apply professional knowledge with the optimization of information technology in teaching, assessment and program design in a variety of educational settings;
  • Identify, plan and conduct an education research-based project and suggest solutions to problems arising in teaching practices;

Level of Autonomy and responsibility:

  • Develop lifelong learning and initiative in conducting research, updating and applying professional knowledge to meet the ever-changing demands of the society;
  • Exhibit responsibility, collaboration, teamwork, professional ethics and diversity embrace in the workplace and with other social relationships;
  • Demonstrate an entrepreneurial spirit, self-direction, and professional leadership.

1.3 Employment opportunity

  • Teach at national and international universities and colleges;
  • Participate in research projects related to language, teaching, educational policies at research institutes, universities, colleges, and domestic and international training centers.

2. The curriculum duration: 24-month full time

3. Requisite knowledge: 60 credits.

4. Enrollment candidate

To be eligible for an offer, applicants to Hoa Sen University’s MAE programs need to meet the following in minimum conditions:

  • Submit the University GPA and the entrance essay;
  • Have a Bachelor’s Degree in English Language/English or English Literature;
  • Have a clear CV;
  • Have enough health to study;
  • Submit complete and timely application according to school regulations
  • Satisfy the requirements related to the admission process and procedures approved by the Ministry of Education and Training of Viet Nam.

5. Training process, requirement for graduation

Training according to the Master’s training regulations (ĐT-QC-06) signed on April 22, 2016 by the Principal of Hoa Sen University.

  • Complete the Training Program and have an overall average score of 5.5 or higher for all modules in the Training Program (on a 10-point scale);
  • Have a graduation thesis defense score of 5.5 or higher;
  • Submitted the thesis and was evaluated by the Council as satisfactory or higher, with confirmation from the instructor and the Chairman of the Council that the thesis has been edited according to the Council’s conclusions, and attached a copy of the conclusion. Essays of the thesis evaluation committee and comments of reviewers for the school to use as reference documents at the Library and archive according to regulations;
  • The entire thesis has been publicly announced on the University’s website;
  • Meets the foreign language proficiency level 2 requirements of level 4/6 according to Vietnam’s Foreign Language Competency Framework or equivalent.
